Happy Father's Day to all the dad's out there. I feel very blessed that the Lord gave me a great christian dad. My dad has did so much for me. I am very proud of him and I love him very much.

Our trip to Missouri

Over the Memorial Day weekend, I took a trip to Missouri with my brother and my dad. I was very excited about this trip. Everytime the three of us have taken a trip together, we have always had a great time. We went to Sweeten Pond Cemetary in Dora, MO., to decorate the graves of my grandparents, my aunt, and my dad's two baby brothers. We stopped at Hodgson Mill in Sycamore, MO. to eat a great picnic type lunch that my mom packed for us. Hodgson Mill is the mill that you see at the top of my blog. It is very peaceful there. They also have a gift shop inside the mill. We stopped and visited with my grandpa's cousin. She is 94 years old. We had supper at Lambert's in Ozark, MO. after an hour and a half wait time. We spent the night in Springfield, MO. and headed home the next day. What is really special about these trips are the talks that we have about life, and the wonderful and funny stories about the good ole days. Trips like this are gifts from the Lord. Im ready for another trip

The Search for James Moore (Family History:Part 9)

I was unable to locate Samuel McCullough and Sarah Moore McCullough (James Moore's wife) household after the 1880 census. Maybe Sam and Sarah died. If Sarah died in the 1880's she would have been in her fifties, so family history may be right that she did die young.

The marriage record that I found for James Moore and Sarah Phillips was dated in 1854. That is three years after my gg grandfather Burton Herman Moore was born. Was James Moore the real father of Burton Herman Moore? Did Sarah Phillips have Burton before she met James Moore? Was Sarah pregnant with Burton when she met James Moore? Was Burton adopted by James Moore? Or, did James Moore and Sarah have Burton before they got married? If James Moore was not the father of Burton Herman Moore, did Sarah ever tell her son the truth? These are good questions. I believe that Burton Herman Moore loved James Moore even if James wasn't his real father. Burton had a son named James Moore, and also on that 1870 and 1880 census Burton Moore was not living with or neighbors with his mother Sarah. It makes me wander if Burton Moore did not like the idea of his mother remarrying after James Moore did not come back. I will continue to stick to the Family History saying that James Moore was the father of Burton Herman Moore. But, What really happened to James Moore?

I have been doing some research on the military unit that James Moore joined during the Civil War. One week ago, I found the military service record of James Moore. The records indicate that James Moore:

- Enlisted on September 25, 1862 in Blountville, TN. (Sullivan County).
-Enlisted for 3 Years
-Recruited by James Alex Rhea. (James Rhea also lived in Sullivan County.)
- His service record states that James Moore was 30 years old on November 07, 1862.
-There was a quarterly muster of the deceased soldiers that ended on March 31, 1863. The record stated that James Moore from the 60th TN Unit; Company G; died at Vicksburg, MS. on January 31, 1863 from Typhoid Fever.

The Search for James Moore (Family History Part 8)

You may be wandering if I found the maiden name of the wife of James Moore. From my research, everything points to the last name of Phillips. James Moore (my ggg grandfather) married Sarah Phillips. How do I know this? In the 1850 census of Sullivan County, TN., Sarah Phillips was living with her mother Rebecca, her brothers William and Henry, and there is a Martha Phillips listed as being born in 1847. If you remember, there is a Martha listed in the James Moore household in 1860. I beleive that Martha was Sarah's daughter and that there is a possibility that James Moore may have adopted Martha. Also if you check out the census records in Hawkins County, TN. in 1870 and 1880, you will find that Sarah and her kids are neighbors with Sarah's brother William Phillips. My gg grandfather Burton Herman Moore had a sister named Sarah Jane Moore. Sarah Jane Moore (sister of Burton Herman Moore) married a Joseph Hudgens in 1873 in Hawkins County, TN. Something happend with this marriage because in the 1880 census Sarah ends up living with her uncle William Phillips in Hawkins County. In that census her Uncle William was a widower. William Phillips lived right by John Moore (Son of James Moore), and near his sister Sarah Moore McCullough (James Moore's wife).

A few months ago, I found a marriage record out of Smyth County, VA. This county is not too far away from Sullivan and Hawkins County, TN. The marriage records indicate that a James Moore married a Sarah Phillips on September 21, 1854. Also married on the same day was Sarah's brother Henry Phillips. He married Elizabeth Ferguson. From the census records, Henry and Elizabeth Phillips lived in Sullivan County, TN in 1860 just like James Moore and Sarah. Please click on the link below if you want to see the marriage entry log.

The Search for James Moore (Family History Part 7)

When I searched the 1870 census of Sullivan County, TN., I was not able to find James Moore (My GGG Grandfather) and his family. James Moore left for the Civil War. I was not able to find Burton Herman Moore (My GG Grandfather) in Sullivan County in 1870 either. In my search of the 1870 census, I believe that I have found Burton Herman Moore (My GG Grandfather) in Jefferson County, TN District 9. The names and ages of the members of the household were:

I believe that my GG Grandfather Burton Moore was living with relatives during the census of 1870. Mary Moore could have been his Aunt, or his cousin. Burton could have been helping Mary out with the farm duties. I'm just not sure.

What happened to the mother of Burton Moore, and his brother and sisters? I found them in Hawkins County, TN. (District 7) in 1870. Hawkins County is just one county to the west of Sullivan County, TN. The household is:

My research indicates that James Moore's wife Sarah "remarried" when James Moore did not return from the Civil War. Sarah Moore married Samuel McCullough on October 05, 1868 in Hawkins, TN. I am very confident from my research that this is correct, because in the 1880 Census of Hawkins County, John H. Moore (Brother of Burton Herman Moore) is living 2 doors down from Samuel and Sarah McCullough. John Moore states in the 1880 census that he lives with his wife Rebecca, his son James W. Moore age 5 months, and his sister Mary R. Moore age 21, and his brother James Moore 18. This census told me that my ggg grandafther James Moore and his wife Sarah had another child after 1860. James Moore Jr was born in 1861 or 1862. I am not sure if Sarah had James Moore Jr before or after James Moore Sr. left for the civil war. She could have been pregnant when James left for war.
