The Search for James Moore (Family History Part 6)

The 1860 Census of Sullivan County, TN. is :

James Moore (My GGG Grandfather): Age 26; Born in North Carolina

Sarah Moore: Age 29; Born in Tennessee

Martha Moore: Age 13; Born in Tennessee

Burton Moore (My GG Grandfather): Age 9; Born in Tennessee

Sarah Jane: Age 7; Born in Tennessee

John H. Moore: Age 4; Born in Tennessee

Mary Moore: Age 2; Born in Tennessee

Betty Moore: Age 1; Born in Tennessee

I first noticed in the census that the first child listed was Martha Moore age 13 and that James Moore was age 26. If James Moore was the real father of Martha Moore, then that would mean that James Moore had his first child at 13 years old. I do not believe that James Moore was the father of Martha Moore. I searched the 1850 census, this family is not in it. The 1850 census does not show the three of them living all together with anyone else either. I have come to the conclusion that James Moore was not the real father of Martha Moore. I am very confident in this conclusion.

The Search for James Moore (Family History Part 5)

So the Moore family tradition states that the father of Burton Herman Moore (my GG Grandfather), is James Moore (my GGG Grandfather), and that James Moore joined the Tennessee Confederacy. He was born about 1834 in North Carolina. He marched off in 1861 and was never heard from again. The military unit that James Moore served was the TN 60th Mounted Infantry, Company G. Also, his wife Sarah died young. She was worn out from having to raise a family of six children by herself during those bad times of the Civil War. She was considered a hero. At the time that I first heard this story from a family researcher years ago, the maiden name of James Moore's wife Sarah was unknown.

This is all the information that was given to me for my search of James Moore. After hearing this story, here are the questions that I had:

1. Is the family tradition story accurate?
2. Who really was James Moore?
3. Who were James Moore's parents?
4. What was the maiden name of Sarah Moore (James Moore's wife)?
5. When was James Moore married and where?
6. Why did Burton Herman Moore move to Arkansas?
7. What happened to James Moore in the Civil War? Did he die? or Or did he get remarried after the war?

In my next blog post, I will give out the details and let everyone know what I have found out in my own research. If anyone out there has any helpful information please let me know. My email address is msmith302@yahoo.com.

The Search For James Moore (Family History Part 4)

(This is part 4. If you have missed reading a part, please read all the parts or you may get confused.)

After I found out that Burton Herman Moore was my Great Great Grandfather, I wanted to find out the name of his father. I posted a message on Genealogy.com, and actually received a response back from a great grandson of Burton Herman Moore. His name was Don Clark. Don told me that he had been researching the Moore Family for 20 years. Don told me to look at the 1860 Census Records for Sullivan County, TN. Listed in that Census we find Burton Moore living with his parents James and Sarah Moore. James Moore was born about 1834 in North Carolina. Don said that family tradition states that James Moore joined the Tennessee confederacy in 1861. He marched off and was never heard from again.

Winter Returns

Temperatures will keep dropping tonight. Good-bye to the 70 and 80 degree temps for now. It has been very busy at work for me. I hope everyone is doing great. I know that times are tough, but the Lord is taking care of us during these tough economic times. His favor is still with us.
